Hard RGP Contact Lenses
We fit hard, rigid gas permeable contact lenses also known as RGP or GP contact lenses from several different suppliers so that we can prescribe the most appropriate visual solution for your eyes and lifestyle. Hard, RGP contact lenses are tailor made from rigid plastic materials which are now generally called gas-permeable (GP) due to their oxygen permeability.
Hard, rigid gas permeable (RGP or GP) contact lenses are extremely durable and if well cared for can last for a long time. They sometimes give better vision than soft contact lenses and allow more oxygen to pass to the eye by floating on the tear layer.
Astigmatism and Toric – Rigid Gas Permeable Contact Lenses
Hard RGP contact lenses are excellent for treating high astigmatism and conditions such as kerataconus where the front of the eye is not a regular shape. The contact lens provides a new smooth refractive surface to focus the light neatly on the retina. Toric RGP designs can be used to improve the stability of the contact lens fit with high corneal astigmatism and for ‘very high’ astigmatism Bi-Toric RGP’s are available.
